Why Cañero?
We want to offer to our consumers a product´s name that better recognizes the qualities of AUTHENTIC ORIGIN and TERROIR, that is to say, a product elaborated entirely in the Dominican Republic, from the collection of the cane and going through the distillation process and the ageing to obtain the final result.
For this reason, we have thought of a new name, CAÑERO, which is more representative, as you can appreciate below.
Cañero is the name and a tribute to the Dominican peasants who have been cultivating and harvesting sugarcane for generations. Cañero strongly claims its Dominican origin. And yet, it is here that one of the first written traces of a sugarcane harvest is found in 1515, a year that sees the export of sugar to Spain.
It was Christopher Columbus himself who planted the first seedlings in December 1493. But it will have to wait until the middle of the 18th century for the rum to really implant.
Our rums are carefully selected, by our famous cuban rum master Juan Alberto Alverez, then aged rigorously according to the traditional Spanish method of Solera in bourbon barrels, which confer these powerful aromas of vanilla.
Four other versions of the range have an additional finishing , in ex-Cognac barrels (House Normandin-Mercier), in ex Whisky barrels (distillery Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands) in ex Sauternes
barrels (Château d'arche) and the last one in ex-barrels of sherry cream (Bodega ARFE).
